Mahashivratri 2025: Why do we do Panchkroshi Parikrama on Mahashivratri?

In the year 2025, the festival of Mahashivratri will be celebrated on 26 February 2025. The day of Mahashivratri is very special for Shiva devotees and devotees wait for this day throughout the year. It is believed that Bholenath and Mata Parvati were married on this day. Therefore, devotees worship Bholenath on this day and by worshiping Shiva on this day, he gets pleased quickly.

Panchkroshi Yatra:

On the day of Mahashivratri, Shiva devotees do Panchkroshi Yatra. Let's know what is Panchkroshi Yatra and what is the relation of this journey with Lord Shri Ram. Panchkroshi Yatra was started by Lord Shri Ram in Treta Yuga. If we believe the reason behind Shri Ram's Panchkroshi Yatra, then this journey was done by Maryada Purushottam Ram to free his father King Dasharath from the curse of Shravan Kumar's father. Shravan Kumar died due to King Dasharath's attack unknowingly. In the grief of their son, Shravan Kumar's aged parents cursed King Dasharath to die in agony in the grief of their son. To free his father from this curse, Shri Ram ji did Panchkroshi Yatra. It is believed that by doing this journey, one gets the desired result.

On the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri, devotees of Lord Shiva do Panchkroshi Yatra. Panchkroshi Yatra is done from the religious places Ujjain and Varanasi. Both Ujjain and Varanasi are the cities of Lord Shiva. Panchkroshi Yatra is performed in Ujjain in the month of Vaishakh. During this time, Baba is worshipped in Shiva temples located in Pingaleshwar, Kayavarohaneshwar, Vilveshwar, Durdhareshwar, Neelkantheshwar.

The Panchkroshi Yatra starts from Manikarnika Ghat in the Ganga in Kashi, the city of Shiva. The Panchkroshi Yatra starts from midnight on the day of Shivaratri. From this place, devotees travel to Kardameshwar, from here they travel to Bhim Chandi, Bhim Chandi Rameshwar, Shivpur, Kapildhara and then again to Manikarnika Ghat.
