In January 2025, a train accident took place near Jalgaon, claiming 13 lives. The accident was possibly involving the Pushpak Express. The incident emphasises the need to upgrade railway safety systems and strengthen maintenance protocols.
9. Prayag Maha Kumbh Mela stampede 2025

Number of deaths: 30 (official), 37-79 (disputed sources)
On 29 January 2025, a stampede occurred during the Maha Kumbh Mela held at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers in Prayagraj. According to official figures, 30 people died and 60 were injured in the incident, although some sources have put the death toll as high as 79. This was the sixth stampede during the Kumbh Mela in the last 70 years. The incident once again highlighted the challenges of crowd management and safety measures in religious events of such a large scale.

8. Gujarat factory fire 2025

On 1 April 2025, a fire broke out after a massive explosion at a fireworks manufacturing factory on the outskirts of Deesa in Gujarat. 21 people died and 6 others were injured in the incident. The factory was operating without a license, and the explosion was caused by highly flammable aluminum powder.
7. Terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir 2025

On April 22, 2025, a terror attack took place in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, killing 26 innocent civilians, mostly Hindu tourists. In this attack, Pakistan-backed attackers entered a village, asked people about their religious identity and then killed them. The incident represented a clear attempt to incite communal violence in India. India launched 'Operation Sindoor' in response to this attack.
6. Gulzar House fire 2025

In May 2025, a massive fire broke out in a jeweler's house in Gulzar House area of the old city of Hyderabad, killing 17 people. The intensity of the fire was so high that the structural integrity of the building was severely damaged. Initial investigations revealed that the fire may have been started by an explosion in an air conditioner (AC) compressor, which may be related to overloading caused by excessive number of AC units and old wiring.

The sinking of the Liberian-flagged cargo ship MSC ELSA 3 off the Kerala coast in May 2025 led to a major oil spill. Although the incident did not directly result in human deaths, it severely affected the coastal ecosystem, marine life, and livelihoods of fishing communities. Exposure to oil vapors posed health risks such as respiratory problems and skin irritation, and consumption of contaminated seafood posed food safety risks.

A major tragic stampede occurred outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on 4 June 2025. The incident occurred during the celebrations of Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) maiden title win in the Indian Premier League (IPL). A large number of fans had gathered outside the stadium, leading to overcrowding. Lack of crowd control and chaos led to a stampede, killing at least 11 people and injuring 33 others. The incident exposed the lack of crowd control and safety protocols at large public events. Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed condolences and ordered an inquiry, announcing compensation.

3. Container ship fire off Kerala coast 2025

On 9 June 2025, a massive fire broke out on the Singapore-flagged container ship MV Wan Hai 503 off the coast of Kerala after a container explosion. The ship was carrying over 1 lakh metric tonnes of fuel and hazardous materials. 4 crew members of the ship went missing in the incident (2 from Taiwan, 1 from Indonesia, and 1 from Myanmar), while 18 were rescued. The Indian Coast Guard and other agencies struggled for several days to control the fire.
2. Air India Flight 171 2025

Number of deaths: 279+ (241 on board + 38+ on ground)
On 12 June 2025, Air India Flight 171 crashed into a hostel of B.J. Medical College in Ahmedabad soon after takeoff. It was a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members. The accident killed 241 people on board, of whom only one passenger survived. In addition, at least 38 people on the ground also died and more than 60 were injured, making it one of the deadliest aviation disasters in history.
1. Pune bridge collapse 2025

4 people were killed and many injured in the collapse of the Kundmala bridge over the Indrayani river in Pune on June 15, 2025. It was a 30-year-old pedestrian bridge, which had already been declared dangerous and warning boards were also installed for it. The incident raised serious questions on the maintenance and safety standards of infrastructure.
