On June 20, 2025, Iran launched a retaliatory missile barrage, firing approximately 20 ballistic missiles. Several missiles impacted Haifa, Tel Aviv, and the Negev region. This sudden escalation marks a new phase in the Iran and Israel conflict.

What Happened in Haifa?

One of the missiles hit a multi-storey building in central Haifa, causing major structural damage and shattering windows in the surrounding area. Emergency responders reported between 21 and 23 injuries, with many victims hospitalised in serious condition due to shrapnel wounds.

Two centuries-old mosques, including the historic Zahir al-Umar Mosque, were struck. Several clerics inside the buildings were injured, raising global concerns about damage to religious and cultural heritage sites.

  • Israel had previously launched airstrikes on Iran targeting missile factories and suspected nuclear facilities in Tehran, Kermanshah, and Tabriz.
  • Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was in Geneva, seeking European mediation and linking any diplomatic solution to an end to Israeli strikes.

The Haifa strike increased Israel’s civilian injury count to approximately 31. In the southern Negev region, including Beersheba, additional injuries were reported. Soroka Hospital experienced an influx of critical cases.

Heritage Under Fire

Haifa's iconic mosques, including the Zahir al-Umar Mosque, were visibly damaged. These structures, hundreds of years old, hold deep cultural and religious importance. Injuries to clerics during prayers have sparked concern among religious leaders across the region.

As Iran maintains its stance on defensive retaliation, European diplomats continue discussions in Geneva. The United Nations and the IAEA have expressed fears that continued strikes may lead to attacks on nuclear facilities or spark broader conflict across the Middle East.

Strategic Implications and Next Moves

  • Israel has declared its intention to continue the war until Iranian military capabilities are dismantled.
  • Iran says it is open to diplomatic solutions if Israeli aggression ends.
  • Third-party nations are watching closely, with some preparing evacuation plans and others urging restraint.

Why This Matters?

  1. Haifa is a vital port and naval centre. Damage here affects Israel’s economy and defence.
  2. The cultural impact is deep, with damaged religious landmarks now at the centre of international concern.
  3. Geneva talks are fragile and could decide whether diplomacy or destruction will dominate the next phase.

What Comes Next?

  • Further strikes from both sides are likely unless a ceasefire is established.
  • Geneva negotiations may be a turning point for de-escalation or further conflict.
  • The humanitarian crisis is deepening, with risks spreading to neighbouring regions.
