Iran allows Indian tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz: Amid the global gas and oil crisis, Iran has allowed Indian ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran had blocked this route amid the war with Israel and the US and warned that any ship passing through it would face consequences.
Iran has assured safe passage to Indian ships. Iran has allowed Indian oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz after External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke with his Iranian counterpart Araghchi. The talks between the foreign ministers of the two countries are aimed at stabilizing the affected prices and availability of gas and oil.
Thailand Ship Attack -
On Wednesday, the Thai-registered cargo ship, Mayuri Nari, was hit by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, causing a massive fire. According to Reuters, the Omani Navy launched a rescue operation, rescuing 20 crew members. Three sailors are still missing and the search for them continues.
The ship was departing from Khalifa Port in the United Arab Emirates and heading to Kandla Port in Gujarat, India. Following the attack, black smoke was seen rising from the ship, and the crew had to abandon ship using life rafts.
What is the Strait of Hormuz?
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most sensitive sea lanes. This narrow channel connects the Persian Gulf (also known as the Arabian Gulf) and the Gulf of Oman. Oil-producing countries like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates export their oil through this channel, accounting for approximately 20 percent of the world's oil exports. The channel is only 30 kilometers wide.
Following recent tensions in West Asia, Iran banned navigation on this sea lane. Iran stated that all ships transiting this route are prohibited and that any attempt to cross the Strait will be attacked by the Iranian military. This is causing oil and gas shortages in many Asian countries.
