India New ₹100 Coin with Bharat Mata: A Historic First on Indian Currency
To commemorate the centenary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a special event at the Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi on Saturday. On this occasion, the Prime Minister released a unique postage stamp and a commemorative ₹100 coin depicting the ideological and cultural legacy of the RSS.
What is the new coin like?
The new commemorative coin has a unique design. One side features India's national emblem, the Ashoka Pillar, while the other side features a striking statue of Bharat Mata in a varada mudra with a lion. RSS volunteers stand in a salutation pose before Bharat Mata. The coin also bears the RSS motto: 'Rashtraya Swaha, Idam Rashtraya Idam Na Mam.' This clearly demonstrates that this commemorative coin embodies the RSS's ideology and spirit of dedication.
On what occasions have 100 rupee coins been issued before?
India has a tradition of commemorative coins. Often, these coins are not for public exchange, but are issued in limited numbers for special occasions and collections. Looking back at history, the first 100 rupee commemorative coin was issued in 2010 to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.
Since then, 100 rupee coins have been issued on numerous occasions, such as the birth centenary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the birth anniversary of Madan Mohan Malaviya, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, and 100 rupee coins have also been issued in memory of Annadurai.
On several occasions, the government has announced special coins, but due to technical reasons or policy decisions, they have not been put into circulation after being minted. Despite this, the importance of these coins remains undiminished, as they have become a priceless part of history and traditions.
