Kolkata, April 7 – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across multiple districts of West Bengal, including the capital city of Kolkata. The alert spans three days, bringing much-needed respite from the unrelenting heatwave that has gripped the state.

The IMD has forecast thunderstorms and scattered rainfall from April 8 onwards in Kolkata, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Uttar Dinajpur, Murshidabad, and Birbhum. These weather developments are likely to bring temporary relief from soaring temperatures and offer residents a breather from the oppressive humidity.

Districts such as Nadia, East Midnapore, North 24 Parganas, Bankura, and Burdwan are also expected to experience moderate rainfall, which could help moderate ground temperatures and humidity levels.

According to meteorologists, a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal formed early Monday, which is now influencing the local weather patterns across eastern India. Combined with upper atmospheric circulation, this system is pulling in moisture from the sea, resulting in partly cloudy skies, increased humidity, and higher chances of rainfall.

The yellow alert serves as a caution for lightning strikes, gusty winds, and brief squalls, advising citizens to stay indoors during peak storm hours and avoid open areas.

Kolkata 5-Day Weather Forecast

  • April 8: Cloudy skies with moderate rain or thunderstorms. Highs near 33°C, lows around 26°C.
  • April 9: Thunderstorms likely. Temperatures ranging between 27°C and 34°C.
  • April 10: Intermittent showers and lightning expected. Minimum temperature: 26°C, Maximum: 34°C.
  • April 11: Cloud cover persists with chances of scattered rain. Temperature dip to 25°C in the early hours, highs at 35°C.
  • April 12: Partly cloudy skies with a moderate chance of thunderstorms. Temperature range: 25°C–34°C.

While the April-to-June forecast suggests above-average temperatures for most parts of India, early April rainfall may help ease Bengal’s heat index. The showers this week could be a sign of shifting patterns as we head closer to the pre-monsoon season.

According to the IMD, normal rainfall in April could balance the impact of the expected dry spells in May and June. However, climate variability remains high, and residents are urged to stay updated with daily forecasts.

  • Avoid open fields and rooftops during lightning events.
  • Unplug electronics during thunderstorms to prevent electrical damage.
  • Stay indoors and away from windows during heavy winds and squalls.
  • If commuting, check live weather updates to avoid flood-prone areas.

As West Bengal braces for a wet week, the impending rain brings a double-edged sword — while it promises a break from the scorching heat, it also raises the likelihood of localized flooding and lightning risks. With climate patterns growing increasingly erratic, staying informed and weather-aware is more essential than ever.

For real-time updates, keep an eye on IMD alerts, local bulletins, and official advisories. Bengal's skies may be cloudy, but there's hope that the showers will clear the heat and offer a breath of fresh air.
