Chennai and several districts across Tamil Nadu are bracing for heavy downpours as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues an orange alert. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai cautioned residents to prepare for rain intensity ranging from heavy to very heavy over the weekend. A low-pressure area brewing over the southwest Bay of Bengal, near the Sri Lankan coast, is the reason behind this sudden weather shift.

According to the IMD, four key districts, including Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and the Karaikal region, are expected to face very heavy rainfall (between 12 cm to 20 cm) on Sunday. Chennai is also on alert due to advancing monsoon winds and sea-borne moisture.

The atmospheric disturbance, which has been stationary since early November 16, comes with an associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8 km above sea level. This system is expected to drift slowly west-northwestward over the next 24 hours. Meteorologists note that the shift might intensify rainfall across the central and coastal regions of Tamil Nadu.

Areas Likely to Receive Moderate to Heavy Rainfall

Alongside the orange alert districts, the IMD has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in the following:

  • Ramanathapuram
  • Sivagangai
  • Ariyalur
  • Villupuram
  • Cuddalore
  • Mayiladuthurai
  • Thanjavur
  • Puducherry and Karaikal

Thunderstorms and lightning are also expected in isolated areas, particularly over Chennai, Villupuram, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts. Residents are urged to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel during peak rain hours.

The ongoing deluge is expected to revive the Northeast monsoon, which experienced a short lull in recent days. Experts point out that such low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal are common during this season but can escalate quickly, resulting in flooding and waterlogging. Authorities are monitoring the situation actively to respond quickly if conditions worsen.

The IMD has urged fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea due to rough conditions caused by strong wind patterns. Coastal residents are advised to stay informed through local updates, especially if they live in low-lying or flood-prone areas.
