Iran has claimed that it has damaged the F-35—the world's most advanced and expensive American stealth fighter jet. Worth millions, this fifth-generation aircraft is renowned for its power and technology.

How powerful is the world most high-tech American F-35 fighter jet?

Amidst the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, an incident has come to light that has left defense experts worldwide sleepless. Iran has claimed to have targeted a U.S. F-35—widely regarded as the world's most advanced and invincible fighter jet—using its missiles. This is the very aircraft equipped with 'stealth technology,' designed to evade radar detection, and it carries a price tag exceeding 900 crore rupees. Reports of damage to this aircraft—considered the ultimate symbol of American military might—have sent shockwaves through the global defense sector; this is because, for a long time, it has been considered the world's most secure fighter jet.

What is the F-35, and why is it so special?

The F-35 Lightning II is a fifth-generation multirole combat aircraft utilized by the United States and its close allies. It is designed to penetrate and strike even the most robust enemy air defense systems while remaining completely undetected. It is not merely an aircraft, but rather a flying computer. Its most significant feature is its "stealth design," which enables it to absorb radar signals and deflect them away. Furthermore, its onboard electronic jamming systems possess the capability to completely "blind" enemy radar.

Stealth Technology: Evading Radar-

The F-35's entire structural design—along with its specialized exterior paint coating—ensures that it appears no larger than a small bird on a radar screen. It has been engineered to fly undetected by radar, execute precision strikes on enemy targets, and gather intelligence during combat operations. For nearly two decades, it has been regarded as the U.S. Air Force's most sophisticated and lethal weapon. This is precisely why, when Iran claimed to have shot down or severely damaged this aircraft, it appeared to signal a major shift in global military dynamics.

An Extraordinary Blend of Speed and Firepower—

The power of the F-35 can be gauged by its top speed of Mach 1.6—approximately 1,930 kilometers per hour. Its combat range extends up to approximately 2,222 kilometers, making it ideal for long-range missions. This aircraft is equipped with an 'AESA radar' system capable of tracking hundreds of enemy targets simultaneously. Furthermore, its 'DAS system' provides the pilot with a 360-degree panoramic view of the aircraft's surroundings, ensuring that no enemy attack goes undetected.

Three Distinct Variants and Their Capabilities—

The F-35 has been developed in three distinct variants to enable it to operate across all three domains—sea, land, and air. The first is the F-35A, utilized by the U.S. Air Force. Priced at approximately ₹883 crore, this variant is capable of carrying up to 8,100 kilograms of weaponry. The second variant is the F-35B, designed for the U.S. Marine Corps. Its most distinctive feature is its ability to take off vertically and land vertically—much like a helicopter. This variant is priced at approximately ₹712 crore.

The third variant of the F-35 is the 'C' model, designed specifically for use on U.S. Navy aircraft carriers. Of the three, this model carries the highest price tag, standing at approximately ₹944 crore. It features a wingspan of 43 feet—wider than that of the other two models—to facilitate easy launch and recovery from ships at sea. This variant, too, is capable of reaching speeds of up to 1,975 km/h and can launch a devastating attack on the enemy while carrying a heavy payload of 8,100 kilograms.

A Network of Electronic Warfare and Sensors—

The EOTS system integrated into the F-35 is unparalleled in its ability to lock onto and track any designated target. This single-seat aircraft is capable of executing a diverse range of operations during a single mission—such as reconnaissance flights, bombing runs, and engaging other fighter jets in aerial combat. Its sensor network is so advanced that it can detect and jam enemy radar signals, ensuring that the adversary remains completely unaware of the direction from which the attack was launched.

Have Iran's Claims Raised Major Questions?

Iran's claim of targeting this aircraft has cast a shadow of doubt over the credibility of this "stealth technology." If Iranian missiles have indeed succeeded in breaching the F-35's defensive perimeter, it implies that, in the context of future warfare, stealth technology is no longer entirely impervious. Defense experts are now investigating whether Iran possesses a new radar system capable of detecting this classified American technology. This incident has the potential to fundamentally alter the global military balance.
