Gen-Z protests have resumed in Nepal, prompting curfews in parts of the country. In September, a dangerous 'Gen Z' rebellion toppled the government of then-Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Following this, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was appointed acting Prime Minister. Now, fresh clashes have erupted between loyalists of the former ruling party and young protesters. Gatherings have been banned in the country's Bara district due to the new youth movement. This situation arose after a direct clash between Gen Z members and supporters of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's Communist Party of Nepal – Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML).
Curfew imposed due to violent clashes -
The situation in Nepal suddenly escalated on Wednesday when youth protesters and CPN-UML workers held rallies in the Simra area of Bara district. Clashes broke out between the two groups. Authorities subsequently imposed a curfew near the airport and several other locations as a precautionary measure. Citing the need to restore order, the district administration said the curfew would remain in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday.
Nepal's Acting Prime Minister Appeals for Peace -
Nepal's Acting Prime Minister Sushila Karki has appealed to Gen-Z protesters for peace. Sushila Karki was appointed interim Prime Minister following the September uprising in Nepal. Karki appealed to all parties, including youth, to "refrain from unnecessary political provocation" and trust the democratic process ahead of elections scheduled for March 5, 2026. Nepal Police spokesperson Abi Narayan Kafle said on Thursday that "the situation is normal... No one has been seriously injured."
Claims of Normalcy -
Violent protests are taking place in Mades Province, a 9-hour drive from Kathmandu. Gen-Z leaders have once again barred political leaders from leaving, as Gen-G groups are creating unrest ahead of the general elections in February-March. However, things appear to be back to normal in Kathmandu. No deaths or injuries have been reported so far. Youth allege that the police supported Oli during the Gen-G movement. Therefore, protests against them are also ongoing.
A major protest took place at Semra Airport in Nepal's Bara district.
Local administration imposes curfew -
The District Magistrate of Nepal's Bara district stated in his curfew order that a curfew will be imposed from 12:30 pm to 8 pm at Semra Airport and surrounding areas in view of the Gen-G protests. Let us tell you here that Shankar Poudel and Mahesh Basnet of CPN-UML were going to come to Bara district of Nepal today for a program, but due to Jain ji's protest the flight was cancelled.
