Full story of the Battle of Rezang La

The story of Major Shaitan Singh and the 13 Kumaon Regiment: Rejang La is a snowy pass located at an altitude of 16,000 feet in the Chushul sector of Ladakh. This pass was strategically very important as it was the only way to reach Chushul airfield. The 'C' Company of the 13 Kumaon Regiment of the Indian Army, which had 120 soldiers, was assigned the responsibility of defending this area. It was led by Major Shaitan Singh Bhati.

On 18 November 1962, the Chinese army launched a sudden and fierce attack on Rejang La at dawn. The Indian soldiers neither had artillery support nor did they have modern weapons to counter the enemy's huge numbers. Apart from this, they did not have enough warm clothes in that snowy weather. But, despite all these challenges, their morale was as strong as the Himalayas.

The Last Stand: When the Chinese soldiers started the attack, Major Shaitan Singh ordered his soldiers to stand firm. The soldiers retaliated against the enemy with their old rifles and light machine guns. The Chinese soldiers attacked several times, but every time the Indian soldiers gave them a befitting reply. Every Indian soldier killed several Chinese soldiers.

Major Shaitan Singh remained at the forefront with his soldiers during this entire battle. He was moving from one front to another and encouraging the soldiers. During this time he was seriously injured, but he did not let his soldiers retreat. He ordered his companion to tie him to a rock so that he could stand and fight till his last breath.

Of the remaining 6 soldiers, some were taken prisoner by the Chinese army and some somehow managed to escape and reach the base. When the Indian Army visited this area after the war was over, they saw an unbelievable sight. Every soldier was found martyred holding his rifle at his front. Their gun had run out of bullets.

In this battle, Indian soldiers killed about 1,300 Chinese soldiers. This was a victory in which even the losing soldiers had actually won. Major Shaitan Singh was posthumously awarded India's highest military honor, the Param Vir Chakra, for his bravery and leadership.
