Diwali Holiday 2025: Countries That Observe Diwali as a Public Holiday

The festival of Diwali isn't limited to India. This festival of lights is celebrated with great enthusiasm in many countries around the world, including India. As the number of Indian diaspora in various countries grows, the popularity of this festival is also increasing. Nowadays, not only are people abroad celebrating Diwali, but governments in many countries have also started declaring it a public holiday.

The US state of California recently took a historic step, declaring Diwali an official state holiday. In September 2025, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 268 into law. Under this new law, California government offices, schools, and community colleges will be closed on Diwali. With this declaration, California becomes the third US state to recognize Diwali as a public holiday at the state level.

India:

National holiday celebrated with grand festivities, family gatherings, prayers, lighting diyas, and fireworks over multiple days starting October 20, 2025.

Pennsylvania

It was the first US state to recognize Diwali as a public holiday in 2024. Governor Josh Shapiro signed the bill on October 9, 2024. Pennsylvania is home to approximately 200,000 South Asians.

New York -

New York has also declared a school holiday for Diwali. Mayor Eric Adams made the announcement. Cultural events and lamp-lighting ceremonies are held extensively in New York on Diwali.

Connecticut -

In 2025, Connecticut also declared Diwali a holiday. The Indian community in this state is also very active. Diwali is celebrated in these states, including at the White House, where the President lights lamps and greets the Indian community.

Singapore -

In Singapore, Diwali is considered an official public holiday. The Little India area is specially decorated with lights and cultural events are held. Schools, offices, and government institutions are closed on this day.

Malaysia -

Here, Diwali is called Green Diwali. It is a public holiday and celebrated with great enthusiasm throughout the country. According to a special tradition, people take oil baths and perform puja. Government and private offices, schools, and colleges are closed on this day.

Mauritius -

Mauritius has a significant Hindu population. Diwali is a national holiday here. People decorate their homes, light lamps, and burst firecrackers. Schools, government offices, and many private institutions are closed on Diwali.

Fiji -

Diwali has been celebrated as an official holiday in Fiji for many years. People from all communities celebrate this festival, making it a symbol of national unity. Schools, colleges, and government offices are closed on Diwali.
