Diwali 2025: The glittering lights of Diwali spread happiness in every corner, but did you know that there is a state in India where neither diyas are lit nor the sound of firecrackers is heard on this day.
Did you know? There is one state in India where Diwali is not celebrated
Diwali, the festival of lights, is being celebrated with unity and enthusiasm across the country. From north to south and east to west, homes are awash with decorations, prayers, and lights. The Supreme Court has allowed green firecrackers this year, bringing some relief to the people of Delhi-NCR. However, there is one state in India where Diwali celebrations are almost non-existent. That state is Kerala, where the festival is celebrated very sparingly or not at all.
Which state does not celebrate Diwali?
Kerala, renowned for its religious and cultural richness, has a different approach to Diwali than the rest of India. Most Hindu families here do not celebrate Diwali with much fanfare. This is primarily due to local beliefs and traditions. It is said that King Mahabali of Kerala died on Diwali day. Therefore, many families celebrate this day in a devotional and peaceful manner, lighting lamps and praying, without any noise or firecrackers.
Onam is celebrated with great pomp and show
Some argue that the rainy season around Diwali in Kerala makes it difficult to light lamps and burst firecrackers. However, this is not the only reason; festivals like Onam, associated with Mahabali, are celebrated with great pomp and show here. Therefore, its religious aspect is considered to be much deeper.
Another interesting point is that Kerala has a Hindu population of approximately 55%, which means there should be no shortage of religious Diwali celebrations there. However, local traditions and historical beliefs have shaped the unique nature of this festival. Although some cities like Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram have now started celebrating Diwali in a simpler way due to modern influences, the festival remains a common celebration in rural areas.
Diwali is not celebrated in Tamil Nadu either
Not only in Kerala, but also in some parts of Tamil Nadu, the traditional form of Diwali is different. People there place special importance on Naraka Chaturdashi. According to mythology, Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura on this day. Therefore, this day is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Tamil Nadu as "Chhoti Diwali."
