Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2025, also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi or Dev Utthavani Ekadashi, marks a sacred turning point in the Hindu calendar. Falling on Saturday, November 1, 2025, this day symbolises the divine awakening of Lord Vishnu after a four-month-long Yog Nidra that began on Dev Shayani Ekadashi. The occasion is considered one of the most auspicious days in the year, opening the doors for weddings, religious ceremonies, and the beginning of the marriage season in India.

However, this year’s Dev Uthani Ekadashi will be slightly affected by the presence of Bhadra and Panchak, both considered astrologically inauspicious periods. Even so, the faith and devotion of millions of devotees will illuminate the night when Lord Vishnu rises once again to bless his devotees.

Why Dev Uthani Ekadashi Is Celebrated?

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu goes into a deep yogic slumber (Yog Nidra) on Dev Shayani Ekadashi, which falls in the month of Ashadha. During this period, the deities rest, and all major auspicious activities are paused. On Dev Uthani Ekadashi in the month of Kartik, Lord Vishnu awakens, marking the end of Chaturmas, the four holy months of rest.

This divine awakening is not just symbolic but also marks the beginning of all mangal kary (auspicious works) like marriages, housewarming ceremonies, and new business ventures. It is said that performing puja and observing a fast on this day washes away sins, brings prosperity, and grants the blessings of both Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2025 Date and Timings

Ekadashi Tithi begins: November 1, 2025 - 9:13 AM
Ekadashi Tithi ends: November 2, 2025 - 7:33 AM
Parana (fast-breaking) Muhurat: November 3, 2025 - 6:15 AM to 8:32 AM

As per the Hindu Panchang, devotees will observe the fast on Saturday, November 1, and break it on the morning of November 3 after sunrise during the Parana Muhurat.

Bhadra and Panchak During Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2025

Ekadashi

This year, Dev Uthani Ekadashi coincides with the presence of Bhadra and Panchak, both of which are considered unfavourable for auspicious activities. According to astrology:

  • Bhadra period: From 8:27 PM on November 1 to 6:34 AM on November 2
  • Panchak period: Will remain active throughout the day, marking it as a Mrityu Panchak since it falls on a Saturday.

In Hindu astrology, Bhadra is believed to bring obstacles and pain if ignored during auspicious rituals. Since Lord Shani (Saturn) and Bhadra are siblings, it is advised that devotees awaken Lord Vishnu only during the designated auspicious time to avoid any inauspicious effects.

The most favourable time for the Dev Uthani ceremony or ‘Dev Jagruti’ will be between 6:01 PM and 8:02 PM on November 1, 2025. During this time, devotees perform rituals, light diyas, and sing devotional songs to awaken the Lord from his divine rest.

Rituals Performed Before Awakening the Deities

On this sacred evening, households across India come alive with devotion. People clean their homes, decorate their puja area, and create colourful drawings of gods and goddesses using ochre and chalk. A small mandap (pavilion) is made from sugarcane sticks, symbolising fertility and prosperity.

Offerings such as water chestnuts, sweet potatoes, sugarcane, carrots, and plums are placed on a steel plate. When the auspicious hour arrives, women and children gather, singing the traditional 'Utho Dev Baitho Dev' song, a heartfelt invocation to awaken the divine from slumber.

The Song to Awaken the Gods: “Utho Dev Baitho Dev”

One of the most cherished traditions of this day is the singing of the Dev Geet. This ancient folk song carries deep spiritual resonance and joy, as it celebrates the moment Lord Vishnu awakens to bless the world once again.

'Utho Dev Baitho Dev, Patkali Chatkao Dev,
Ashadh mein soye the Dev, Kartik mein jaage Dev,
Khali ghada meetha paani, uth Dev peeyo Dev,
Haath pair jhulao Dev, ungli chhankao Dev,
Kumari bitiya ke byaah karao Dev,
Shakkar, singhara, gajar, ber chadhayo Dev,
Aaj jag jao Dev, jag jao Dev.'

This melodious chant is believed to invite divine blessings and prosperity into every home. The ritual culminates with the lighting of ghee lamps and the offering of sugarcane, symbolising sweetness and joy in life.

Spiritual Importance of Dev Uthani Ekadashi

Dev Uthani Ekadashi is not just a day of rituals; it’s a day of spiritual awakening. It teaches that after every period of rest or stillness comes renewal and new beginnings. Observing the fast with faith purifies the mind and soul, promoting balance between material and spiritual pursuits.

From this day onwards, marriages, house inaugurations, and all auspicious functions can begin. In essence, Dev Uthani Ekadashi marks the revival of divine energy and positive cosmic flow across the universe.

As the evening of November 1, 2025, approaches, devotees across India will sing, pray, and light diyas to welcome Lord Vishnu back into the conscious realm. Despite the overlapping Bhadra and Panchak, faith and devotion will shine through, reminding us that the divine awakening is not just celestial, it’s a personal journey of renewal, light, and hope.
