Delhi Rain Today: Cold Wave, Poor AQI, and IMD Weather Updates

Akanksha - December 27, 2024 09:41 AM

Delhi woke up to an early morning shower on Friday, December 27, adding to the ongoing cold wave conditions and further dropping the temperature in the national capital. The rain and overcast skies have brought both respite from poor air quality and challenges for commuters.

Current Weather Update

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Delhi experienced rain early on Friday, with visuals showing light showers across prominent locations like Moti Lal Nehru Marg and India Gate. The city enveloped in a slightly foggy atmosphere, saw temperatures hover around 13°C at 7:20 am. The minimum temperature for the day is expected to settle at 12°C, while the maximum could reach 20°C.

The IMD has issued warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms on December 27 and 28, predicting gusty winds with speeds of 30-40 kmph. On Thursday, light rain and drizzles were observed, and conditions are expected to intensify further.

Hourly rainfall data from the IMD indicated:

  • Safdarjung: 7.3 mm
  • Palam: 6.6 mm
  • Lodhi Road: 6.8 mm
  • Ridge Area: 1.8 mm

Air Quality Index (AQI) Status

Delhi’s air quality remains a cause for concern despite slight improvements due to the rain. On Thursday, the AQI was recorded at 340 (very poor) and is expected to improve marginally. However, several areas still report alarming levels:

  • Pusa: AQI 353 (Very Poor)
  • Mundka: AQI 413 (Severe)
  • Dwarka Sector-8: AQI 412 (Severe)
  • IGI Airport (T3): AQI 340 (Very Poor)
  • Lodhi Road: AQI 345 (Very Poor)

An AQI below 50 is considered good, but readings over 300 are classified as 'very poor' or 'severe,' indicating potential health risks for residents.

Security Measures

In addition to the weather updates, the national capital has heightened security following the demise of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. Heavy police deployment is visible, particularly around Moti Lal Nehru Marg, where his residence is located.

The combination of rain, cold waves, and fog has created challenging conditions for Delhiites. Commuters are advised to plan their travel cautiously as visibility may be affected. However, the rain has brought some relief by slightly improving air quality, offering a silver lining amid the winter chill.

Stay tuned for more updates as Delhi navigates this unusual weather pattern during the peak of winter.
