On the eve of Diwali, Ayodhya illuminated the world by achieving not one but two Guinness World Records at the grand celebration of Deepotsav 2024. The sacred city celebrated the eighth edition of its annual festival with over 2.5 million diyas lighting up the banks of the Saryu River and a synchronized aarti by 1,121 vedacharyas (religious teachers). These achievements set the stage for a historic event that showcased Ayodhya's spiritual fervour and cultural richness.
Two Guinness World Records Mark Historic Deepotsav
The Ayodhya district administration, in partnership with the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department, achieved an unparalleled display of unity and reverence with two Guinness World Records:
- Largest Display of Oil Lamps: A total of 2,512,585 oil lamps illuminated the banks of the Saryu, creating a mesmerizing sight and the largest diya arrangement in history.
- Most People Performing Aarti Simultaneously: A record-breaking 1,121 vedacharyas participated in the synchronized diya rotation, symbolizing the collective devotion of the city.
Pravin Patel, a Guinness World Records adjudicator, announced the titles, congratulating the city for this grand achievement alongside his colleague, consultant Nischal Bharot.
Ayodhya Shines with Cultural and Spiritual Significance
The festivities went beyond just setting records. Led by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the celebration included vibrant lighting displays, sound and light show narrating the story of Ram Leela, and captivating drone formations above Saryu Ghat. A majestic chariot procession featuring artists depicting Lord Ram, Sita, and Lakshman symbolized the triumphant return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya.
This year’s Deepotsav, the first since the ceremonial 'Pran Pratistha' of Ram Lala at the new Ayodhya temple, also displayed 18 elaborate tableaux representing significant moments in Lord Ram's life, crafted by the Information and Tourism Departments. The five-day festival honours Lord Ram's return to Ayodhya after his 14-year exile and has drawn millions of devotees across India.
A Grand Tribute to Ayodhya and Its People
Receiving the Guinness certificates, CM Yogi Adityanath expressed his pride in Ayodhya’s role in upholding India's cultural heritage. Joining him were Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Deputy CMs Brajesh Pathak and Keshav Prasad Maurya, who participated in the celebrations that re-emphasized Ayodhya’s spiritual essence.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his appreciation through an X post, describing the Deepotsav as 'amazing, incomparable, and unimaginable.' He highlighted the emotional impact of the festival, which fills the hearts of Indians everywhere with 'new enthusiasm and energy.'
Deepotsav 2024 has set records and rekindled a deep spiritual connection with India's heritage, leaving a luminous impression that will inspire future generations.
