Customs Raid at South Indian Stars’ Homes: Luxury Car Smuggling Probe
Two big stars of South cinema, Dulquer Salmaan and Prithviraj Sukumaran are once again in the news, but this time these stars are in the news not for any of their films but for allegations of tax evasion. Customs officials have raided the houses of Dulquer Salmaan and Prithviraj Sukumaran under 'Operation Nukhoor' and apart from these two stars, many Malayalam actors are also on the radar of the customs officials. The officials raided about 30 places including Prithviraj Sukumaran's residence in Thevara and Dulquer Salmaan's residence in Panampilly Nagar. The officials also searched Prithviraj's house in Thiruvananthapuram, however, they did not find any suspicious vehicle there.
Basis of Investigation:
Customs officials are investigating vehicles that are allegedly being smuggled into India from Bhutan using fake registrations to evade taxes. Officials allege that after auctioning some expensive vehicles (including those decommissioned by the Bhutanese military) in Bhutan, smugglers use fake registration documents to first register them in states like Himachal Pradesh and then resell them in Kerala under the "KL" registration plate.
This is a case of tax evasion:
The Customs Prevention Branch, with the assistance of the Motor Vehicles Department, is examining the ownership documents of several vehicles at the raided locations. The Customs Department has so far identified approximately 15 such cars imported into India, some of which are located in Kerala, and this is the basis for the raids.
According to officials, the vehicles found during the raids will be seized and notices will be issued to the owners to submit their vehicle documents. Officials say the investigation involves a network of dealers, agents, and potential consumers spread across several districts, including Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, and Malappuram.
