Chhath Puja is no ordinary festival, it is a feeling of piety, austerity, and glitter of religion. Lakhs of devotees in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and some parts of Nepal stand barefoot by the ghats every year during fasting without a single drop of water, just to show their gratitude to the Sun God to bring life, health and prosperity. The four day chhath event will be celebrated in the final week of October in 2025 and preparations have already begun in most families.
When is Chhath Puja in 2025?
Chhath Puja will start on October 25, 2025 and will end on October 28, 2025 with the prayer of rising sun called Usha Arghya. These times are after the Shukla Paksha of the month Kartik, a time considered to be the most powerful in the cosmic world during the time of gratitude.
Chhath 2025 Calendar
- 25 October, Saturday - Nahay-Khay
- 26 October, Sunday - Kharna
- 27 October, Monday - Sandhya Arghya (Evening Offering)
- 28 October, Tuesday - Usha Arghya (Final Offering)

What Happens on Day 1 - Nahay-Khay?
The first day is kindly and holy. Religionists immerse themselves in a river or wash at home using rites of purity. Freshly prepared sattvik meals initiate the fast, that is, without onion, garlic or salt. Lauki bhat (gourd and rice) and dal is also consumed to cleanse the body before the hard fast kicks off.
What Happens on Day 2 - Kharna?
Kharna is intense and symbolic. Devotees maintain a nirjala fast (no food, no water) the whole day. After sunset, prasad made of rice pudding (prepared in jaggery), fruits, and handmade breads is prepared with absolute cleanliness and offered to Chhathi Maiya. This is the final solid intake before the 36-hour waterless fast begins.
What Happens on Day 3 - Sandhya Arghya?
The atmosphere on this day is unmatched. Riverbanks glow with diyas, sugarcane arches line the ghats, and families gather with soop (bamboo baskets) full of thekua, fruits, coconuts, and sacred offerings. Devotees stand in water and offer the first arghya to the setting sun, a rare moment in Indian rituals where the sunset is worshipped.
Sunset on 27 October 2025 is expected around 5:40 pm.
What Happens on Day 4 - Usha Arghya and Parana?

Before dawn, devotees return to the ghats for the final offering, this time to the rising sun, honoring new beginnings and divine mercy. As the first rays fall on the water, prayers are completed, and the 36-hour fast ends with prasad.
Sunrise on 28 October 2025 is expected around 6:30 am.
Families then distribute prasad to relatives and neighbors, marking the conclusion of the festival in an atmosphere of joy, relief, and gratitude.
Why Is Chhath Considered So Powerful?
It is the only major Hindu festival dedicated solely to the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya. The fast is believed to sharpen willpower and cleanse karmic energy. Sunset and sunrise arghya symbolize the cycle of endings and new beginnings. Ghats, music, and devotion create a cultural scene that feels cinematic every year.
Chhath Puja 2025 will again witness millions standing in still water with folded hands, not to ask, but to thank. Whether you celebrate or just witness it, the serenity and intensity of this festival remain unforgettable every single year.
