The popular reality show Bigg Boss 19 is again in the news, but this time for a controversy. The makers of the show, Endemol Shine India and Banijay, are facing a case of copyright violation, and a demand for ₹2 crore has been made against them.
Why the Case Was Filed
India’s oldest copyright licensing body, Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL), has accused the makers of playing Bollywood songs without permission. The issue happened in the 11th episode, where songs "Chikni Chameli" (Agneepath) and "Dhat Teri Ki" (Gori Tere Pyaar Mein) were used.
These songs are licensed to Sony Music India, while PPL owns the rights for public use. On September 19, lawyer Hiten Ajay Vasan sent a notice to the production houses, naming directors Thomas Gausset, Nicolas Chazarain, and Deepak Dhar responsible. PPL has asked for compensation and license fees, warning the makers not to use its songs without approval in future.
Lower Budget This Season
Reports say Bigg Boss 19 has a smaller budget compared to the last season. However, host Salman Khan is still being paid a huge amount. His reported fee is between ₹120–150 crore for the whole season. He earns around ₹8–10 crore every weekend episode and will host for 15 weeks.
This year, the show premiered on August 24 on JioCinema and is also aired on Colors TV after 90 minutes of streaming on OTT. The makers seem to be cutting costs but focusing on digital platforms to reach more viewers.
Contestants Grabbing Attention
Even with the legal problem, the contestants of Bigg Boss 19 are making news every day. Mridul Tiwari, Tanya Mittal, Amaal Mallik, Kunickaa Sadanand, and Gaurav Khanna are among the most talked-about names inside the house.
