The Austrian Grand Prix 2025 at the Red Bull Ring started with a bang when Red Bull star driver Max Verstappen crashed on the first lap after colliding with Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Both drivers had to retire, causing a stir in the race.
What happened during the F1 race?
The Formula 1 race started with McLaren's Lando Norris from pole position while Verstappen started from P7 after a tough qualifying. On the other hand, Mercedes driver Antonelli started from P9. The race descended into chaos at Turn 3.
Antonelli locked his brakes, causing his Mercedes to collide with Verstappen's Red Bull. Both cars were damaged in the accident, forcing them out of the race. The safety car was called in to clear the debris.
With Verstappen and Antonelli out, Norris and Piastri have a clear chance to dominate. George Russell will be looking for another win after last year's success. This crash raises questions about Verstappen's future and Antonelli's development prospects.
Christian Horner on the possibility of Max Verstappen moving to Mercedes in 2026.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has finally dismissed speculations of Verstappen moving to Mercedes in 2026.
Christian Horner dismissed the ongoing rumours and reminded everyone that Verstappen will be associated with Red Bull for many more years.
We are very clear about our contract with Max till 2028. So whatever is being said is purely speculation, but we don't pay too much attention to it."
Toto Wolff and George Russell spoke on speculation
Earlier, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff had publicly shown interest in having Verstappen join the team.
George Russell, who currently drives for Mercedes, recently admitted that the team is indeed in discussions with Verstappen. Notably, Russell's current contract is set to expire at the end of the 2025 season.
Horner's response to Russell's statement
"I can imagine George is disappointed that he hasn't been given a contract yet, but that's a matter between him and his team. But the situation with Max, we obviously know where we are and obviously Max knows as well. So everything is subject to noise and obviously within any contract it remains confidential between the parties."
