A tragic train accident in Assam has once again highlighted the fragile intersection between wildlife habitats and expanding transport infrastructure. In the early hours of Saturday, a high-speed Rajdhani Express collided with a herd of elephants in Hojai district, resulting in the death of seven animals and triggering widespread concern.
While the incident caused significant damage to railway property and disrupted train services, authorities confirmed that no passengers were injured. Emergency response teams were quickly deployed, and restoration work began to normalise rail movement along the affected route.
The collision has sparked fresh debate over railway safety, wildlife protection, and preventive measures in regions where animal movement and rail corridors frequently overlap, even outside officially designated wildlife zones.
Rajdhani Express Collides With Elephants in Assam
The Sairang–New Delhi Rajdhani Express met with the accident at around 2:17 am in the Jamunamukh–Kampur section under the Lumding Division of Northeast Frontier Railway. The train struck a herd of elephants that had wandered onto the tracks in Assam’s Hojai district.
As a result of the collision, seven elephants were killed on the spot, while one elephant was reportedly injured. The impact was severe enough to derail the locomotive and five coaches of the premium train.
Officials stated that the site of the accident is located approximately 126 kilometres from Guwahati, a region known for occasional wildlife movement despite not being marked as an official elephant corridor.
No Passenger Injuries Reported
Railway authorities confirmed that despite the derailment, no passengers were injured in the incident. The quick application of emergency brakes by the loco pilot is believed to have prevented a more serious outcome.
Passengers from the affected coaches were safely accommodated in vacant berths available in other coaches of the same train. This swift response helped ensure minimal distress to travellers.
Railway officials reassured passengers that safety protocols were followed diligently and that medical assistance was kept on standby as a precaution.
Immediate Response and Rescue Operations
Local police and railway officials reached the accident site shortly after the collision. Hojai Superintendent of Police confirmed that rescue and restoration teams were actively working to clear the tracks.
Senior railway officers, including the General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railway and the Divisional Railway Manager of Lumding, rushed to the site to oversee operations.
Forest department officials were also present to assess the situation involving the elephants and manage the injured animal.
Restoration Work and Train Diversions
Following the derailment, restoration work began immediately to clear the damaged locomotive and coaches from the tracks. Heavy machinery was deployed to ensure the safe removal of debris.
Trains scheduled to pass through the affected section were diverted through alternative routes, including the UP line, to minimise disruption to rail services.
The Rajdhani Express, after detaching the affected coaches, resumed movement towards Guwahati at around 6:11 am. Additional coaches were planned to be attached later to accommodate all passengers comfortably.

The Railways clarified that the accident site is not a designated elephant corridor. This statement has drawn attention to the unpredictable nature of wildlife movement in forest-adjacent areas.
Officials noted that while designated corridors are monitored more closely, elephants can still cross tracks in other areas, particularly during night hours.
This incident has raised questions about whether additional safeguards are needed even outside officially identified wildlife zones.
Role of the Loco Pilot
According to railway officials, the loco pilot acted promptly upon spotting the herd of elephants on the track. Emergency brakes were applied in an attempt to avoid a collision.
However, due to the proximity of the animals and the speed of the train, the elephants reportedly dashed against the train before it could come to a complete halt.
The Railways acknowledged the pilot’s quick reaction, noting that it likely prevented injuries to passengers and further damage.
