The first half of 2025 has left India staggering under the weight of tragedy, with one calamity following another in an unprecedented string of deadly events. From sacred grounds to urban chaos and international tension, the scale and diversity of these disasters have shocked the conscience of the country. As the nation mourns, fears grow stronger. What more could this year hold?
Here’s a closer look at the seven most devastating incidents that scarred India from January to June 2025:
Stampede at Mahakumbh Mela, Prayagraj - January 29
One of the holiest events in Hindu tradition turned nightmarish when a deadly stampede broke out at the Mahakumbh Mela on the sacred day of Mauni Amavasya. The rush began as millions surged forward to bathe at the Sangam during the Brahma Bela—a brief and highly auspicious window for holy dips.
Authorities had been expecting large numbers, but the scale exceeded all planning. Over 660 million devotees attended the Mela, and on that fateful day, 37 people died in the chaos, with 60 more injured, some critically. Survivors recount moments of suffocation, trampling, and confusion, revealing gaping cracks in crowd control and emergency response mechanisms.
Dual Tragedy on February 15: Delhi Railway Stampede & Prayagraj SUV Crash
In a chilling coincidence, two separate but equally devastating events occurred on the same day.
At Delhi Railway Station, a crowd surge involving pilgrims en route to the Kumbh led to a stampede that killed 18, including 14 women and three children. Overburdened platforms, lack of crowd management, and panic contributed to the catastrophe.
Meanwhile, in Prayagraj, a speeding SUV ferrying pilgrims collided with a bus on a narrow highway. All 10 occupants of the SUV died instantly. The back-to-back losses that day drew attention to the strain India’s infrastructure faces during large-scale religious movements.
Gujarat Firecracker Factory Explosion - April 1
April opened with a harrowing industrial disaster. A boiler blast at a firecracker manufacturing facility in Disha, Banaskantha district, sparked a massive blaze. Workers, trapped by flames and toxic fumes, had little chance of survival. Seventeen lives were lost, many charred beyond recognition.
Investigations pointed to gross violations of safety protocols, such as improper chemical storage and faulty machinery. The incident raised alarms over lax enforcement in small-scale factories that often operate without oversight.
Pahalgam Terrorist Attack - April 22
A serene meadow in Jammu & Kashmir turned into a battlefield when Pakistani militants struck tourists in Baisaran Valley, Pahalgam. Twenty-six individuals, primarily Hindus, were attacked after militants demanded religious identification.
Among the dead was a Christian tourist from Indore and a local Muslim guide, who tried to protect the victims and paid with his life. The brutality of the attack led to the swift launch of Operation Sindoor, through which Indian forces dismantled nine terrorist hideouts across the LoC. The tragedy left deep wounds in national unity and security confidence.
IPL Victory Stampede in Bengaluru - June 4
What was meant to be a moment of celebration turned into another black day. Just ahead of RCB’s IPL victory ceremony at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, thousands gathered to catch a glimpse of the team. With no clear crowd regulation or barriers in place, a stampede broke out, killing 11 people and injuring 47 others.
The incident underscored how festive events, if mismanaged, can turn deadly in moments. Footage showed crumpled bodies, torn banners, and frantic screams, highlighting the lack of coordination between event organizers and local authorities.
Air India Flight Crash in Ahmedabad - June 12
The deadliest of all six tragedies occurred mid-June, when Air India Flight AI-9201 crashed into a residential area near Ahmedabad, just minutes before its scheduled landing. Eyewitnesses describe the horror as a fireball engulfing homes and wreckage scattered across blocks.
Out of 242 passengers, 241 perished, with an additional 34 casualties on the ground, making this the worst aviation disaster in India’s recent history. The sole survivor, a 19-year-old engineering student, is still in critical condition. The cause is under investigation, with early signs pointing to a mechanical fault and pilot distress.
Kedarnath Helicopter Crash - June 15
A Bell‑407 chopper carrying seven pilgrims and a pilot to Guptkashi crashed in Uttarakhand amid bad weather, killing all on board, including a toddler. It’s the latest in a string of recent Himalayan chopper incidents.
