Every year, Maharashtra Day 2026 is observed on May 1 to celebrate the formation of the state of Maharashtra, and its split from Gujarat, and Bombay Presidency.
The day also commemorates the Maharashtra Samyukta Movement that was responsible in forming the separate state based on language from the Bombay Presidency.
Maharashtra was formed on May 1 in 1960 following the Bombay Reorganisation Act, which divided Bombay into Maharashtra and Gujarat based on language.
The day is also celebrated as Labour Day or May Day to highlight the role of workers in the formation of the station, and has been observed since then.
Interestingly, May 1 is not only celebrated as Maharashtra Day but also Gujarat Day because of the day the two states were split in 1960.
