Every year, International Falafel Day 2026 is observed on June 12 to celebrate the Middle Eastern fritter, and relish its many flavours.
The day was started by Israeli businessman Ben Lang in 2012 to celebrate the dish; being a food lover, he has also established International Hummus Day.
Falafel is a deep-fried Middle Eastern street food that is made up of chickpeas or fava beans, along with fresh herbs and spices, and is either made into balls.
Being plant-based, the dish is also eaten across cultures during fasting periods like during Lent for Coptic Christians, and even for iftar during Ramzan.
The dish is popularly eaten in Egypt, Israel, Lebanon and Syria, and across the world including India, where it is served at the likes of Bayroute and Za`atar.
