Several social media videos went viral falsely claiming that consuming eggs can lead to cancer.
The controversy erupted after a video claimed that Eggoz eggs contained substances linked to cancer.
It alleged the presence of AOZ, a compound that forms when nitrofuran antibiotics break down.
These antibiotics are strictly prohibited at every stage of poultry production under the Food Safety Act.
However, there is no scientific evidence showing that these compounds are carcinogenic or cause cancer.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India said that recent claims linking eggs to cancer risk are misleading.
The official statement noted that these claims are scientifically unsupported and could cause unnecessary public alarm.
FSSAI clarified that eggs sold in India are completely safe for consumption.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies nitrofurans under Group 3, indicating they are not classifiable as to their carcinogenicity in humans.
