Cataract Awareness Month is observed annually throughout June to spread awareness about cataract, the leading cause of vision loss.
Cataract is the clouding of the eye`s natural lens caused by protein buildup, which scatters light and impairs vision.
The Cataract Awareness Month was established by Prevent Blindness, a US-based non-profit that designated the month of June to educate people about cataract.
Clearing Cataracts Together` is the theme for this year, focusing on early detection and highly effective, modern surgical treatments.
Cataracts affect 100 million people globally, accounting for roughly half of all blindness worldwide. In India alone, 9 million people are affected by it.
