Salt draws excess fluid from swollen tissues and helps reduce inflammation. Gargle with half teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water for 30 seconds. Repeat 3-4 a day.
Try warm herbal teas with ingredients such as ginger. Add some lemon juice and consume warm for soothing effects.
Unless the irritation is caused by cold exposure, cool foods can soothe a sore throat. Try chilled smoothies or cold yogurt in moderation.
Honey has antimicrobial and cough suppressing abilities. Add honey to teas or warm water to help relieve irritation from sore throats.
Dry air can worsen throat irritation. Use cold-mist humidifiers to add moisture to the air as it may ease dryness in the throat.
