The Cricket Board of India (BCCI) has decided to recommend the names of womens cricket legend Mithali Raj and top spinner Ravichandran Ashwin for the countrys highest sporting honour, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna.

For the Arjuna Award, the board will send the names of senior batsman Shikhar Dhawan, Lokesh Rahul and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah.

Last year, Dhawans name was overlooked.

Dhawan will captain India in the upcoming limited-overs series in Sri Lanka and is a strong contender for the Arjuna Award.

The left-handed batsman scored 5977 runs in 142 One Day Internationals and scored 2315 and 1673 runs for India in Test cricket and T20 matches respectively.

A BCCI official said on Wednesday, “No female cricketer has been nominated for the Arjuna Award. Mithalis name has been recommended for Khel Ratna.

It remains to be seen whether the panel appointed by the Sports Ministry chooses Mithali for the award in the Olympic year.

Mithali completed 22 years in international cricket last week. This 38-year-old player is the most successful batsman in ODIs with more than seven thousand runs.

Ashwin, who has won the Arjuna Award, has consistently performed well for India in Test cricket.

Apart from taking 413 wickets in 79 Tests, he also took 150 and 42 wickets in ODIs and T20 Internationals respectively, although he no longer plays for India in the shorter formats.
