However, the Chhetri-led Indian team has the last chance to secure. knockout qualification when they face Syria at the Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar on Tuesday, 23 January.

Syria has opened up a narrow one-point lead over India in the AFC Asian Cup Group B standings after playing out a goalless draw in their tournament opener against Uzbekistan. However, in their next match, they suffered a 0–1 defeat to Australia, putting them in the same risk category as India.

Syria is currently ranked 91st in FIFA, 11 places ahead of India at 102nd. Despite the challenge, coach Igor Stimac's team is on course to victory, taking inspiration from previous wins in the Nehru Cup tournaments in 2007, 2009 and 2012. In their previous encounter during the 2019 Intercontinental Cup in Ahmedabad, both the teams had played out a 1-1 draw, boosting India's chances of victory on Tuesday.

Qualification opportunities for India

India needs a win against Syria in Al Bayt to finish third in Group B. However, securing that spot does not guarantee advancement to the Round of 16. Goal difference, currently at minus five after two matches, plays a crucial role if the teams are tied on points.
